My Inglot freedom system lipstick palette: Review and Swatches

How often is it that you buy a palette and end up using only a few shades? Let's face it, it is very rare that a fixed palette contains no duds and appeals to everyone. Here comes the beauty of customized palettes.
The Inglot freedom system offers varieties of palettes which you could buy to make your own custom eyeshadow/lipstick/blush/compact/concealer palette.

I have been wanting to try out Inglot lipsticks and I opted for the palette which can hold five round refills. The 5 refill palette costs Rs. 850, but I got it online on sale at about Rs. 590. The palette is sturdy and has a semi-translucent magnetic top which can be taken off. Earlier they had a flip-open box style palette which had its own mirror and a place to hold the brush. I realise the old version probably would have made the palette more travel friendly but I like the new palette which has a bulky ruler-like feel to it.

Catrice Ultimate Nail Lacquer - 16 George Blueney Review

I has a soft corner for fun names when it comes to buying makeup. Brands like Benefit and OPI do it so well. So, during my recent trip to Germany, when I came across a Catrice nail polish called George Blueney, I knew I had to pick it up - a gorgeous blue polish, the George Clooney reference, money in my wallet - it was a no-brainer really.

Review: Essence Nail Art Cracking Top Coat in Crack Me Black

Essence nail polishes are hard to come by in India. But where they are available, they are an instant hit. The reason is simple. They are super affordable and high quality. On my recent trip abroad, I picked up a few Essence products. The cracking top coat up for review today is one of the few nail paints I picked up.

Travel Packing series: Liquids I carry in my hand luggage

When I travel on holidays, I almost always carry only a cabin luggage. I find my trusted backpack provides me with greater mobility and flexibility than having to carry a suitcase. Also, having only a carry-on luggage mean zero chances of lost luggage on long-haul flights and also eliminates waiting for luggage at the conveyor belt upon arrival.
With all its perks, carrying only a cabin luggage comes with certain restrictions. Before you decide to pack your luggage for carry-on, I strongly recommend you read the TSA guidelines from the airport/airlines' website.
In my travel blog, I have written a post on how to pack liquids in carry-on luggage.
In this post, I will share with you what liquids I carry in my hand luggage. Of course, depending on where I am going, the products change a big. When I am going trekking, I pack a different set of products than when I am traveling to a big city. When I will be staying at an expensive hotel, I pack less toiletries than when I will be traveling on a budget and so on.

Travel Packing Series: Makeup Edition

Many of you know that I travel extensively, due to work and out of a passion for travel. Some of you also read my travel blog: Peanuts on the road. I have a trip coming up shortly and was planning a Travel Packing series on my travel blog when I decided to do a Make-Up edition on this blog.
Let me mention at this point that unless I am going to a conference, I prefer to travel with only a rucksack - does not matter if I am going away for two weeks or a month. So, packing, for me, requires a lot of thinking ahead and editing the to-pack list.
Because we take a lot of pictures on our travels, it is necessary to look nice and fresh on camera. Even the simplest no-makeup look requires some products. So if you are like me and carry only the bare minimum, certain consideration is must while packing your makeup bag. In this post, I will share with you how I plan the products I carry. Hopefully, this will help you plan when you take your next trip.

China Glaze When Stars Collide and the story of a heartbreak

This is not your conventional review. In fact, this is no review at all. Instead, today I share with you a story of a beautiful stunning purple polish and how it broke my heart.
Meet When Stars Collide - a gorgeous dark dirty purple holographic nail polish. A polish I was saving for review when my nails recovered from the break and grew long and nice again and when the overcast monsoon skies gave way to sunny days so that I could capture this polish in its full glory.

Happy Independence Day

To India – My Native land

My country! In thy day of glory past

A beauteous halo circled round thy brow,

And worshipped as a deity thou wast.

Where is that glory, where that reverence now?

Thy eagle pinion is chained down at last,

And groveling in the lowly dust art thou:

Thy minstrel hath no wreath to weave for thee

Save the sad story of thy misery!

Well let me dive into the depths of time,

And bring from out the ages that have rolled

A few small fragments of those wrecks sublime,

Which human eyes may never more behold;

And let the guerdon of my labour be

My fallen country! One kind wish from thee!

- Henry Louis Vivian Derozio

May we rise again from the ashes of our past to surpass even our most glorious times.
Happy Independence Day everyone.

My Favorite Things: L'Occitane Rose 4 Reines

I am not much of a floral fragrance person. While I love roses, I have always felt their scent never translated well in any of the perfumes I have tried. A few years back, I started using a cologne by Tabac (which reminds me, I should probably do a post on that as well, since that is clearly one of my favorite things) and being a creature of habit, for years that was my scent - citrusy and woodsy. That is, until I discovered  L'Occitane Rose 4 Reines series.

My Favorite Things: Clarins Beauty Flash Balm

I had never invested in high end skin care till last year. For the last seven years, I have been living on my own, moving from place to place, climate zone to climate zone all in the name of getting one education degree after another. And all this moving and shifting had taken its toll on my otherwise non-complaining, low maintenance skin. After spending two consecutive summers under an unforgiving sun without using any kind of sun-protection, not even an umbrella, my skin looked every bit of the sorry neglected creature it was.
Anyhoo, around this time, my long time, long distance boyfriend and I had decided to tie the knot and with the wedding preparations on the way and many research into makeup and skin care woke me up to the necessity of pampering my skin. That was my introduction to investment in good skin care and I have not looked back since.

Of my many favorite products, Clarins Beauty Flash balm occupies a pride of place.

Quick Swatch: Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle

I did a post on the beauty products I turn to on the days I want a no-makeup yet put together look.
I got a request to put up swatches of the Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle and so here it is. It stays on my lips for about 3-4 hours if I do not eat in between that time. I will not do a detailed post here but there are many lovely reviews of this product online.

Revlon lip butter Pink Truffle

Revlon lip butter Pink Truffle

On my lips, it looks a bit more pink than it is in the tube and I understand this is the case with many of these lip butters. The shade might turn out different on your lips.
Anyhow, here is what it looks on my lips.

Bare lips for reference
Pink Truffle on lips

For reference: I oscillate between NC 40 and 44 in MAC depending on the season since I spend most of my time under a harsh unforgiving sun. At the moment I am about NC42.

My Favorite Things: Everyday beauty products

From Monday to Friday, I live on a beautiful campus away from the city. I visit Kolkata only on weekends, and that too, not regularly. With all its perks, living in a rural setting does not allow one to really dress up much.

So here are the products I turn to when I am on campus, for the finished look without looking made-up.

Gala of London Shade 811 Pearl : A maroon polish review

Gala of London is a brand I really like when it comes to nail polishes. They are super cheap, come in over 70 shades and are great for water marbling. They come in two different sizes, 7ml and 9 ml and the shade selection is different for the two different sizes. I have already put up a couple of reviews (Shade 612 and Shade 1 and 7) of this brand and they were of paints I really liked. The current review is however of a paint I did not like as much.

Two blue nail polish from Revlon: Fashionista and Turquoise Blue Review

Today I have for you two blue polishes from Revlon. Revlon is one of my favorite brands when it comes to nail polish.
Product name:  Revlon 453 Fashionista and 472 Turquoise Blue
Product price: INR 150
Product quantity: 8 ml.
Shelf life: Three years.

My thoughts:
The shade 453 Fashionista is a warm deep, somewhat muddy, teal color. The shade 472 on the other hand is a turquoise that is strangely difficult to photograph. It comes of a bit lighter in the photograph than in person. They both have a creme finish and are easy to apply. The polishes are opaque in two coats and has decent drying time.

Mint Mani for Talia Joy

Talia Joy was a young youtube beauty guru who was fighting cancer. Recently, just a few days before her fourteenth birthday, Talia lost her battle and passed away. Her countless subscribers have watched her brave the ravages of cancer over the years as she created video after another on youtube - videos which were funny and wonderful and such a pleasure to watch. I was one of her endless admirers and when Nicole of Nail Polish Wars started the Mint Manis for Talia, I knew I had to take part. I was travelling for a few days and couldn't do the post on Friday, so here is my belated post, my mint mani for the courageous little girl who gave the world so much in her short short time on this planet.
Just keep swimming Talia. You will always be in our hearts.

NOTD: Neon Orange and Maroon Ruffian Manicure

I did a free-hand ruffian manicure the other day with a neon orange peeking out from under a blackened maroon polish. Hope you like it. Leave your comments below. Do subscribe or like the facebook page, it will make me happy.

Two Gala of London polish review: No1 and No7

Hello all. Today, I will review two polish from Gala of London. I already talked about my love for the brand here. The two polishes up for review today are both neons from Gala and have similar formula so they don't really require separate posts.
Product name: Gala of London in No. 1 and No. 7
Product price: INR 40-50 at local cosmetic stores.
Product quantity: 7 ml.
Shelf life: Not mentioned.

My thoughts:
No.1 is a lime green and No. 7 is a bright orange. The polish formula in both cases is similar,  streaky after one coat. These even out after the second coat but the nail line is visible. On application of three-four coats, they become opaque.

A pretty green polish review: Gala of London Shade 612

Gala of London is a brand I really like when it comes to nail polishes. They are super cheap, come in over 70 shades and are great for water marbling. They come in two different sizes, 7ml and 9 ml and the shade selection is different for the two different sizes.
Product name: Gala of London in Pearl 612
Product price: INR 65-90 at local cosmetic stores.
Product quantity: 9 ml.
Shelf life: Not mentioned.

My thoughts: The shade 612 is a lovely forest green with no discernible shimmer.. It has a cream finish and wears decently. I mainly use this color for water marbling but even worn on its own, it is definitely pretty.

Nude nails: Colorbar Nail Polish in Flirty Mauve

Since I  work in a lab, I am always on the look out for neutral colours to wear when I have official meetings or presentations.

Product name: Colorbar Nail Polish Flirty Mauve 49
Product price: INR 110.
Product quantity: 9 ml.
Shelf life: Three years.

My thoughts: Flirty Mauve is a perfect nude polish for me. It is dirty mauve which leans towards a pale creamy brown in the bottle. When wet, I see the faintest silver shimmer in the polish which does not translate on the finished nails.

In the bottle

Baby blues: Lakme fast and fabulous nail paint in Misty Grey

I bought this polish for two reasons. The unique shape of the bottle really caught my eye and the color, oh the color.
Product name: Lakme Fast And Fabulous One Stroke Nail Color Misty Grey 34
Product price: INR 199.
Product quantity: 10 ml.
Shelf life: Three years.

My thoughts: In the bottle, the nail paint looks a pale pastel blue. I don't really see the grey in the name. Misty blue would have been more appropriate.

NOTD: Brown and Maroon Water Marble

Water marbling can be a great way to create deigns on your nails. It is a versatile technique that allows creation of very different effects just by changing the pattern or the nail paints.
In this NOTD, I have shown different marble effects on two accent nails (ring and thumb).
On the ring finger, I have created a floral pattern and on the thumb, a swirl design. Though the end result is very different on the two fingers, I have used the same orange and maroon nail polish in both cases and have just taken advantage of the way these two polish interact with each other to come up with two very different looks.
Hope you like them.
Till next time...

Some Bling For Your Nails: L'Oreal Color Riche Le Nail Art 004 Pearly Dress Review

Though I prefer creating my own nail art over buying stick-on/ stamp-on options, the L'Oreal nail stickers looked tempting enough for me to buy.
Product name: L'Oreal Color Riche Le Nail Art. Shade: 004 Pearly Dress.
Product price: INR 299.
Product quantity: 18 stickers.

My Thoughts: These nail stickers come in a black envelope with a clear slot through which the design can be seen.
Packaging: front
At the back, clear instructions are provided regarding application. I think it is very clever how the brand has put images of all available stickers on the back. Very tempting.

Packaging: back
The shade I chose was 004 Pearly dress which is a pretty silver grey shimmery sticker, studded with silver crystals.

Sniff Sniff: Revlon Scented Perfume Nail Enamel in Raspberry Rupture Review

I bought this scented polish a while ago. At this time, the review might not even be relevant but I would like to share my opinions just the same.

Raspberry Rapture
Product name: Revlon Scented Perfume Nail Enamel. Shade: Raspberry Rupture. Product price: INR 150.
Product quantity: 8 ml.
Shelf life: Three years.

My thoughts: In the bottle, the nail paint looks raspberry pink with hints of blue undertone. On my fingers however, they appear a hotter pink and is not very flattering for my skin tone.
